Wind and rain

A bit of a slog to work this morning, with headwinds gusting to 30 or 40 kph. At least it wasn't raining. We seem to have had rain every day or two for the last couple of weeks. The mysterious disappearance of my rain jacket hasn't helped. How do you lose a bright yellow jacket? I've been putting off buying a replacement in the hope of it turning up and making do with my ancient K-way jacket (which is "water resistent" but not very) in conjunction with a garbage bag with arm and head holes. I did spring for new gloves at MEC over the weekend. I'd been getting buy with two odd gloves. Both lefts, unfortunately. The new ones are some sort of fleecy stuff but claim to be waterproof and windproof. I'm a bit sceptical of the waterproofness but to judge by this morning they are windproof. Nice and toasty.

Today was my first post-end-of-daylight-savings-time commute. I preferred riding in the dark at 6:15 AM, when there's not much traffic, to coming home in the dark amongst the rush hour throng. I think I need more and better lights. Must build up the long-awaited dynohub wheel.

Eric Newby

Eric Newby is dead. I think I shall have a memorial re-read of A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush and perhaps try to hunt up the list of necessary items for travel in India given in A Book of Traveller's Tales.
